Compare roll directions

Carpet roll and seam planner

A roll can run in either room direction, and the lower-area option is not always the best seam location. Compare both orientations before discussing a cut plan with the installer.

Useful planning situations

  • Broadloom carpet estimates
  • Comparing seam directions
  • First-pass roll length planning

Assumptions

  • The room is a plain rectangle.
  • All strips run parallel with consistent pile direction.
  • Seams equal the number of strips minus one.

Limits and checks

  • Doorways, closets, pattern repeats, cross seams, and fill pieces are excluded.
  • Actual rolls can contain defects or length constraints.
  • Final seams must be planned by a qualified installer.

Frequently asked questions

Does automatic mode always choose the best plan?

It chooses the orientation using less carpet area. Visibility, traffic direction, and manufacturer seaming rules may make the other plan preferable.

Why can a room smaller than the roll still have waste?

You purchase the full roll width for the required cut length, leaving an offcut beside the room.

Are closets included?

No. Measure closets and adjoining areas separately, then have an installer nest pieces into a complete cut plan.
