Method
How to use this calculator
- 01
Count the treads and risers that will receive material.
- 02
Measure finished width, tread depth, and riser height in inches.
- 03
Enter extra tread depth for wrapped nosing if applicable.
- 04
Review face area, nosing length, and waste-adjusted order area.
Good for
Useful planning situations
- Resilient flooring on stairs
- Carpet stair takeoffs
- Stair nosing length estimates
Working model
Assumptions
- All stairs share the entered dimensions.
- Every counted tread and riser is fully covered.
- Nosing allowance adds surface depth to each tread.
Before ordering
Limits and checks
- Landings, winders, curved stairs, stringers, and pattern matching are excluded.
- Code compliance and slip resistance are not evaluated.
- Measure each non-uniform stair separately.

Frequently asked questions
Are treads and risers usually the same count?
Not always. Count the actual surfaces receiving flooring; the top landing or bottom riser can change the totals.
What is nosing allowance?
It is extra material depth used when flooring wraps or extends around the tread nose. Enter zero for a separate cap that does not need wrapping.
Does this check stair code?
No. It is a material estimate only; verify dimensions, transitions, nosing, and slip requirements with applicable rules and professionals.
